Planetary Diet and CKM Health
Planetary diet and CKM health are increasingly being studied together. A plant-forward dietary pattern may support cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic health through a combination of nutrient-rich foods.
Planetary Diet and CKM Progression
A prospective observational study followed 5,757 adults for approximately five years. Researchers examined adherence to the EAT-Lancet dietary pattern and changes in cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic, or CKM, health.
Participants with the highest adherence to the dietary pattern had 29% lower odds of progressing to severe CKM stages compared with those with lower adherence.
What Is a Planetary Diet?
The EAT-Lancet approach emphasizes plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds. It generally encourages a greater proportion of plant foods while limiting certain highly processed foods and excessive consumption of some animal-derived foods.
Why Might Diet Matter?
Diet can influence several factors related to CKM health, including body weight, blood pressure, blood glucose, lipid levels, and overall nutritional quality. A diverse plant-forward diet also provides fiber and numerous naturally occurring bioactive compounds.
However, the reported study was observational and dietary intake was self-reported. Therefore, the findings show an association rather than proving that the diet directly prevents CKM progression.
Practical Takeaway
A balanced, plant-forward dietary pattern may be a useful part of supporting heart, kidney, and metabolic health together. Individual nutritional needs can differ, particularly for people with kidney disease or other medical conditions, so dietary changes should be personalized when appropriate.
Further controlled research is needed to determine how specific components of the planetary diet influence CKM health over time.
